PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

The next step in your professional journey is to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. PADI Instructors are the most in-demand dive professionals with scuba career opportunities available globally. As a PADI Instructor, you’ll transform the lives of others while living a life others only dream of.

What’s involved?

The first step in becoming a PADI Instructor is to enroll in the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) here at Diving with Nic. During your IDC training, you’ll build upon your skills as a Divemaster while also developing your public speaking and teaching skills. You will also hone your in-water skills to demonstration-ready levels, and learn how to properly evaluate in-water skills performed by student divers. Our IDC is led by Platinum Course Director Kev Turner, with more than 15 years of experience, having conducted IDCs in the UK, New Zealand, Malta, Thailand, Egypt, Honduras, Iceland and Maldives.
The IDC is comprised of three parts. The first will be the learning phase, where you’ll learn about the PADI system of education and the courses you can teach. Phase two is the development part of the IDC, where you will develop your presentation skills for the classroom, confined water and open water to a level where you will be confident not only in front of your examiner during your Instructor Examination, but also in your students.
The evaluation phase happens throughout the entirety of the IDC, where we will be constantly evaluating you, your professionalism, skill level, theory, standards knowledge and presentation scores.

What can I teach as a PADI Instructor?

As a PADI Instructor, you will be able to teach and conduct a variety of PADI’s most popular recreational courses and programs, such as the following:

  • PADI Scuba Diver/Open Water Diver
  • Adventure Diver/Advanced Open Water Diver
  • Rescue Diver
  • Divemaster
  • Advanced Snorkeler (Skin Diver) and Discover Snorkeling
  • Discover Scuba® Diving
  • PADI Seal Team™ and Bubblemaker™
  • PADI ReActivate® and Discover Local Diving
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy
  • PADI AWARE™ Specialty
  • Coral Reef Conservation

What prerequisites are required to enrol in the PADI IDC?

To enroll in an Instructor Development Course, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Have been a certified diver for at least six months
  • Be a minimum of 18 years old
  • Have at least 60 logged dives to enter the IDC, and 100 logged dives to attend an Instructor Examination
  • Complete an Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care certification course (or equivalent course) within the past 24 months
  • Be medically cleared for diving by a physician within 12 months
  • You will also need to be certified as an Emergency First Response Instructor or hold a qualifying credential for your PADI Instructor application to be approved at PADI

Emergency First Response Instructor.

As an Emergency First Response (EFR) Instructor, you’ll be allowed to train people in First aid and Secondary care. This is a required certification to become a PADI Scuba Instructor but is also valid as a standalone certificate. The course itself takes one to two days to complete and will certify you to teach the two main courses: Emergency First Response Primary Care (AID) and Emergency First Response Secondary Care (First Aid). Within these two courses, CPR and first aid skills are integrated into an easy-to-remember emergency care sequence. On top of these two primary courses, you will also be able to teach Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use and Emergency First Response – Care for Children, which covers the specific first aid used on children and infants.
